FA Cup romance ain’t dead, but it ain’t the same

One of the few downsides to Bromley’s exponential rise through the football pyramid in the last twenty years is the disappearance of the non-league cup run.
When Bromley became an EFL club, it guaranteed them a first-round berth and the genuine FA Cup romance dissipated. Don’t get me wrong, last season’s run to Bromley’s first-ever appearance in the FA Cup third round was fantastic. But if we’re honest, the path there wasn’t filled with FA Cup magic.
The run almost ended before it began, as the Ravens' first-round game away at National League Rochdale saw them blow an early two-goal lead. As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Bromley were 3-2 down, but quickfire goals from Levi Amantchi and Corey Whitely dramatically spared their blushes.
Then came a televised second-round tie away at National League Solihull Moors, the team Bromley beat at Wembley to win promotion. I travelled to Solihull for that game, and given what was at stake, not to mention the history between the two sides, it was one of the most low-key games of the season.
