Ashley Charles has been ruled out for the 26/27 season with a cruciate ligament injury, delivering a horrible twist on the eve of Bromley’s first League One campaign.

Charles’ stock was at an all-time high heading into this season, and with the 27-year-old entering the best years of his career, he seemed primed to reach new heights. Alas, his curtain has fallen. La commedia è finita.

To be struck down on the crest of a professional wave is a monstrously cruel act of fate. When he joined the club from Wealdstone for an undisclosed fee in February 2024, it took fans a while to understand what Charles brought to the team. In fact, some felt Andy Woodman had wasted the club’s money.
