When Bromley announced earlier this week that they are going to name the new East Terrace after their official Club Ambassador, George Wakeling, the news was met with a mass nod of approval from supporters who experienced his two spells as manager.
If you weren’t around during George’s tenure, let me put into context exactly what he achieved at Bromley and the impact he made on the club. There is a very good reason they’re naming a stand after him.
George Wakeling took over as first-team manager in the summer of 1990, when the club had just been relegated from the Isthmian League Premier Division in heartbreaking fashion. If ever the club needed a lift, it was this exact moment in time.
The gaffer arrived at Hayes Lane on the back of a successful spell at Leyton-Wingate FC, and he brought a significant number of his former squad with him. Many of those players, like Frank Coles, Pat Gordon, and Paul Taylor, would go on to become legends at Bromley. There was also a young striker named Jon Goodman, who put on such a show in pre-season that Millwall paid a reported £34,500 to sign him.
