When Neil Harris was announced as Cambridge United manager in February 2024, it was very much a case of unfinished business.

Signing a two-and-a-half-year deal, he took control of a side that was bottom of League One and eight points from safety. However, his appointment was made with eyes firmly fixed on the future rather than short-term miracle working. An uninspired haul of 15 points from his first 15 games confirmed Cambridge’s relegation to League Two, but that scenario was always on the cards.

This season has showcased a more realistic version of the project Harris is trying to develop. They might be on the same number of points as Bromley and one place behind them, but it is clear that Cambridge’s aspirations are for a play-off spot at a bare minimum.

"The team is going to change, and so is the mindset of conceding cheap goals, not scoring enough goals, and also having a soft underbelly," Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire when relegation was all but a certainty.
